Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown[a] is a combat flight action video game developed and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. An entry in the long-running Ace Combat series, it was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2019, and for Microsoft Windows the following month. The game features support for virtual reality.

The game takes place in the same fictional universe as the previous numbered games in the series. Following the events of Ace Combat 04 and Ace Combat 5, the Osean Federation brokered peace between the military power of Erusea and the rest of the Usean continent. The IUN was formed to maintain peace across the Usean continent, while former President Vincent Harling orders a space elevator funded off the Erusean coast in order to revitalize the continent’s economy. However, the space elevator creates resentment among the Eruseans, who see it as unnecessary Osean intervention.

The story begins with the narration by Avril Mead, an Osean aircraft mechanic who ends up caught in the crossfire between Osean and Erusean forces while flying a formerly-mothballed old fighter jet she restored. The war begins when Erusea launches a surprise attack using a massive number of UAVs against military targets from Osea and the International Union Peacekeeping Forces (which Osea participates), capturing most of the Usean continent including the International Space Elevator, which is the brainchild of ex-Osean president Vincent Harling. For violating wartime aviation regulations,

Osean Air Defense Force’s 444th Air Base. Meanwhile, the player, callsign “Trigger”, is an Osean IUPF pilot of Mage Squadron fighting back the Erusean invasion, until he takes part in a mission to rescue Harling, who was trapped in the Space Elevator since the Erusean invasion began. During the mission, Erusea deploys the unmanned aerial fortress Arsenal Bird and its fleet of drones. While trying to cover Harling’s escape from the drones, one of Trigger’s missiles apparently hits Harling’s plane, killing him. Trigger is thencourt-martialled, charged with Harling’s murder, and transferred to Spare Squadron, a penal military unit also stationed at the 444th Air Base.
